iPhone 3G Pre Order Now!

Just got the latest e-mail from O2 on the iPhone 3G availability - pre order now! Yes, O2 are taking pre-orders and say if successful and in stock will deliver by 11th July.

What's most interesting about this is the fact the handset will be delivered to your home, does this mean you can activate it at home, or will it come activated from O2?

Whatever the outcome, I'm off to pre-order mine!

iPhone 3G Pay Monthly

EDIT: Upon attempting to pre-order, I have the following problem, looks like O2 can't cope with? Typical.

Error

02 iPhone 3G is Almost Here!

Just received this in the mail from O2:

Thanks for giving me almost no news at all O2.

O2 iPhone 3G Pay & Go Prices - Magic Trick?

Now you see it and now you don't! O2 pulls of a great little magic trick by revealing prices and plans for the Pay & Go iPhone 3G, but then removes them suddenly without any explanation? I'm thinking someone may have made a bubu?

"The new 3G 8GB iPhone for Pay & Go will be available for £299.99 and 16GB for £359.99,"

Anyhoo, luckily the internet is wiser than that, see price plans below.

iPhone Price Plans

The tariffs for the new iPhone 3G have been out now ever since it was announced at WWDC. Like the old model you have the option of subscribing to a new 18 month contract.
Unlike the the old tariffs and handset, there are subsidies and now also a Pay and Go option. Which means users won't have to sign up to a long term contract to purchase an iPhone 3G (another reason why many did not purchase one initially.)

Pay Monthly

I'm still puzzled on why there is such a huge difference between the £30 and £35 tariff's inclusive minutes and texts. But looking at it closely again from a marketing angle, I can see why (rolls eyes).

Pay & Go

Head on over to the O2 website for more info and register your interest in the iPhone 3G.

Hands on Pics of iPhone 3G

The first hands on pictures of the new iPhone 3G have been circulated.

Both Laptop Mag and iLounge have done some reviews on the device. Some simple tests like 3G speeds and build are mentioned, highlights from both websites respectively below:

via Laptopmag

Speedy Browsing
After checking out the new hardware, it was time to put the 3G to the test. It took about two seconds to transition from Wi-Fi to the 3G network. I tested out the speeds on three sites: It took the phone 4 seconds to load www.laptopmag.com, 2 seconds to load cnn.com; 3 seconds to load www.nytimes.com. Pretty damn speedy.

Swift GPS Connection
I couldn’t get the best handle on the GPS here in the convention center. But I was able to bring up a map of the San Fran area. According to an Apple rep, turn-by-turn directions will be available through the Maps program. Above the map was a button to find “current location.”

via iLounge

Unlike the original iPhone, which has proved much more resilient to the sorts of scratches and scuffs that plague iPods, the iPhone 3G’s shell is indeed just glossy plastic with a thin layer of clear coating. It’s not ceramic, as some might have guessed, and not covered in a magic material that won’t scuff: as a result, you can expect to see marks similar to the ones on first-generation iPod nanos and fifth-generation iPods, all over again. The black version, as shown here, picks up fingerprints and smudges at an impressive rate; we wish we’d been able to take some pictures without the smudges. Ironically, the white plastic color that Apple discontinued for iPods may wind up being the most attractive color for new iPhones, especially after spending a few days in a pocket or purse.

iPhone 3G - What I've been Waiting For?

iPhone 3G

At the World Wide Developer Conference 2008 Steve Jobbs told the world what many were waiting for, an iPhone with 3G and GPS. Although there are many still who would want a better camera lens on it, touting 3.2MP as the minimum required on a handset these days, the majority wanted 3G (mainly HSDPA) and GPS (with A-GPS), two key features Apple ignored on initial release of the iPhone. Personally this is my viewpoint too. When the iPhone was released initially, it did (in my eyes) 2 things better than anything else on the market (bearing in mind I was equipped with Nokia's Multimedia Monster - the N95) it was the UI and the Wide Screen.

specs_controls
The UI made using the iPhone appealing again. Combined with the large wide ratio screen and the Safari browser users could interact with the handset with more ease, where one wasn't looking for buttons to make use of the functions, looking for a way to move the cursor to select hyperlinks, it was all done by touching. The large screen was integral to the success of the iPhone's "internet in your pocket" campaign. From here on it's mostly downhill... The main problem Apple faced - missing basics!
Missing basic features as SMS, MMS, assigning mp3 tacks as ringtones, the ability to save images from the browser all added to the woes of the lack of 3G and GPS.

But since then Apple has taken feedback on-board and given the majority what they desired. The iPhone 3G includes both 3G and GPS and also adds a few more key features to enable the seamless conversion of the web, mobile, multimedia and home computer.
The new iPhone 3G also comes in 2 flavours (16GB model only) black and white.

iPhone Price Slashed? iPhone 2 Announcement Imminent?

iphone1
Mobile Today revealed a £100 price cut on the 8GB version of the Apple iPhone. The "promotional" price will come in effect from Wednesday 16th April running until 1 June, coincidently the rumoured date the new iPhone2 is slated to be announced/released.

An O2 spokesman said:
'The special offer will make the iPhone an unbeatable proposition in the market, helping O2 to further gain market share.'

Unlucky for those wanting the 16GB version, it is not included in this promotional price drop.

This is evidently clear that stores are trying to get rid of stock which most likely will become redundant upon release of the iPhone2, unless of course you are a sucker and still opt to pay for that!

Dope Wars + iPhone = iDope

dopewarsiPhone
If you're cool, and always wanted to be a drug dealer (or maybe was just interested for "educational" purposes) but never had the courage (or the stupidity) to do it for real, there is a likely chance you've played Dope Wars. Yes dope wars let's you trade "dope" and build your empire!.
Now a native version for the iPhone is available (you will need to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch).
Now you can deal drugs from the comfort of your home, toilet, privacy wherever you want, and all for FREE!
Don't forget; sell when it's high and buy when it's low, and watch out for the popo!

Freeverse Bringing Flick Sports Games for the iPhone

iphonegames
With the release of SDK for the iPhone from Apple, we can expect a host of new applications and games being developed for the device. Most of those will obviously make use of the touchscreen UI and the built in Accelerometer sensor, two features Apple has more or less designed to perfection.
Freeverse, a software and games development company based in New York is aiming to take advantage of those exact features.

The guys at Freeverse obviously love their iPhones, a fact stated on their website. Now they are planning to develop a few games whcich would take advantage of the touch UI and the Accelerometer and make games for the iPhone. The plans so far are;

Flick Sports™

Using the iPhone’s unique flick/pinch feature, we’re working on Golf, Bowling, Soccer, and Baseball (to start). Fun, colorful and quick, these will be ideal games for a modern mobile platform.

Flick Sports: Moto Racing

Ah, the wind in your hair, the bugs in your teeth and the open road stretching out in front of you! Using the iPhone’s cool accelerometer, (you know, that doohickey that knows when your iPhone is sideways or not), you can steer your motorcycle to victory in this wild racing game. Awesome characters and a touch of humor, its a Freeverse game after all, will add to the fun.

I have played around with the iPhone and am impressed with the Touch UI and the Accelorometer, the iPhone also has a great game which utilizes those features. the responsiveness and feedback from both motion and touch is impressive, iPhone owners should look ahead to some great developments from now on.
Whilst the guys at Freeverse work on the SDK and develop the games, you can enjoy a free web game to pass those anxious days...
