Diablo Released

N800

Nokia has just released the latest update for Nokia N810 and N800 Internet Tablets - Diablo. This is a significant update for a few reasons:

  • Seamless Updates without the need for flashing your device - This was not an easy process before, it is much easier and quicker now.
  • Future OS upgrades OTA (over the air) via WLAN - hopefully it actually gets some updates unlike some Nokia handset's which have the option but never get any.
  • New automated notification on home screen of new updates to OS and apps - I like this!
  • New updated integrated mail system based on Modest and tinymail.
  • More stability and speed improvements and enhancements - can already feel it is faster and more stable.
The updates can be found for the N810 and N800 respectively. For more info visit the ITT and Maemo websites.

N95 V21.0.016 Firmware Available via NUS

N95_1_v21_FW
The latest version of firmware for the original Nokia N95 is now available via Nokia Update Service. It took a while and now it has arrived, coincidently along with a beta version of PC Suite too (early reports say this is buggy).

Unfortunately my net connection at home is down so I can't get it yet. My ISP has sulphur in their servers, how that got there I don't know. The sheer incompetence, really! Also as I'll be busy for the next few days (social commitments) I doubt I'll be able to get it until the weekend! Frustrating indeed!
For now keep your eyes on some of the blogs on my blogroll for more info and feedback regarding this update.

Y-Browser 0.88

ybrowser

Y-Browser, our favourite 3rd party file manager that does so much more has been updated by Dr Jukka to version 0.88. The update includes amongst other things bug fixes, layout changes and improved support and stability for Feature Pack 2 devices.

The main list of changes included in this version are:

- Lots of layout change fixes
- Some bug fixes to improve stability (Especially with FP2 devices)
- File modified time changed from UTC to local time
- Added Command short cut accelerators to the menu items
- Edit-Mark, menu has now two additional options: Mark with wild card & inverse selection
- File association settings added
- Plug-in manager added
- Email folders shown now as well (with Mail folders plug-in)

If you need more info on what Y-Browser does and the benefits of it, check out the review on Symbian in Motion by Zach.

The good news is that the application is signed and ready for installation, which is great in the current climate of Symbian Signed being such a mess. Head on over to the Dr Jukka website to get the addition plugins as desired.

Mobitubia Updated to 1.76, Youtube.com Problem fixed

mobitubia
Sittiphol Phanvilai has updated the Mobitubia client to 1.76 for S60 3rd Edition models to fix a bug, one big huge one in fact; that bug is Youtube.com. After they had tweaked their site so that 3rd party Youtube clients would not work any more with their site, (which also included emTube), giving users the "Video Not Found" error.

Now I don't have a problem with Youtube saying that they don't want their content to be accessed directly by 3rd party applications, but what other alternative is there? The official Youtube client? Have they actually seen the quality of the playback on that? Now I don't know about you, but from where I stand, this is just Youtube crippling the progress and evolution of potentially 2 great applications. Why not just work with the developers and make a great application which works?

Do not stand in the way of evolution Youtube, either embrace it or get out of the way. Just like time, evolution waits for no one.

Luckily this latest update for Mobitubia fixes this issue and you can enjoy it still, just go to the official website to download it. The client supports (tested:)

  • Nokia N95
  • Nokia N93
  • Nokia N82
  • Nokia N75
  • Nokia E65
  • Nokia E61
  • Nokia E61i
*Note, the Nokia N95 8GB is also supported, but if you are running on V15 firmware you do know that you have native Youtube.com support? This means you can watch Youtube videos on the full Youtube .com website. You can try either or both if you prefer.

Screenshot 3.01

My favourite screenshot application and the one that I swear by is available in V3.01.

Screenshot for Symbian OS is an application to take screenshot on your Symbian OS mobile phones (S60 3rd). You can capture screenshot and save it to a file in JPEG, PNG, BMP or MBM format. The screenshot can be sent directly to a PC via Bluetooth.
Thanks to AntonyPranata for updating it. This version (from the horses mouth) is better because?:
The current official version (2.80) does not capture N-Gage games properly.
The new version (3.01) has fixed this problem; but the signed version is not available yet.

You can download it here but it is unsigned, which means you will have to sign it yourself or wait for a signed version to be released.

N95-1 V21.0.001 Spotted

There has been recent talk about the V21.0.001 firmware for the Original Nokia N95, which is available to developers currently. This version includes the support of Flashlite 3.0 within the S60 browser, which means support for viewing video from Youtube and other similar sites within your S60 browser.
This feature is currently available for the N95 8GB running on v15.0.015 firmware.
Hopefully we will see it for public release soon.

As soon as it is available for public release (here's hoping very soon) I'll have the details on here. So stay tuned.

[Update] Blog Name Change

So I've more or less finished with 2007 now.
I can concentrate on 2008 from now on. There are a few questions to be answered and some info to be pointed out in regards to the changes which will be sweeping through this blog. The main factor is the name of the blog itself, as many of you know this is my Online Handle which I use more or less everywhere I register online. The name change will mean that this blog will take issues in the mobile industry in general and not just Nokia N95 related, let's be honest I'm not going to be with an N95 for ever! I will also start posting more personal posts here from time to time but more of that will be aimed at my Vox Blog to be honest.

As most of you are aware I have started writing a few entries for Symbian in Motion which is a blog run by Zach, and I will be dedicating more time on that something I'm excited about myself. Zach is a fellow Mobile9'er and friend. He also has recently started writing for The Boy Genius Report so make sure to check out his posts.

Moving onto the technical important info, the feed url for the blog has changed also, so take note if you want to stay updated.

I will be looking to do a "Year with the N95" post which is in the middle of being completed. I'm hoping it will be an intuitive post for those still looking into purchasing one or are just after the best ways to make use of it as it will be covering a lot of applications and modifications available for it.

So look forward to more posts coming soon on here and on Symbian in Motion

I leave you with a few pictures of how the New Year arrived in my eyes on board the Tattershall Castle overlooking the London Eye (pictures aren't the best). There is a video of the fireworks display that took place recorded with the N95! I just haven't had the time to edit it (it's 15 mins long!

[Update] A Step Back In Time

Finally after some testing, a lot of head scratching. The final versions of the MacOS theme have been completed.
Thanks to my buddy Zach for doing the landscape testing on his E65i.

Symbian-Freak has just obtained and released kindly for us the official change log for the new v11.0.026 firmware for the Nokia N95.

Here is a list of some of the welcomed improvements on my part:

  • Camera improvements, stabilisation and quicker video capture

  • Browser out of memory improved

  • WLAN stability improved

  • Multimedia menu startup time improved

To find out the full list of improvements and an actual comparison of the camera enhancements pop on over to THIS page.

Unfortunately branded handsets do not have the firmware update available, and neither do some generic handsets either. Fingers crossed they will be available soon.
