Diablo Released

N800

Nokia has just released the latest update for Nokia N810 and N800 Internet Tablets - Diablo. This is a significant update for a few reasons:

  • Seamless Updates without the need for flashing your device - This was not an easy process before, it is much easier and quicker now.
  • Future OS upgrades OTA (over the air) via WLAN - hopefully it actually gets some updates unlike some Nokia handset's which have the option but never get any.
  • New automated notification on home screen of new updates to OS and apps - I like this!
  • New updated integrated mail system based on Modest and tinymail.
  • More stability and speed improvements and enhancements - can already feel it is faster and more stable.
The updates can be found for the N810 and N800 respectively. For more info visit the ITT and Maemo websites.

N95 V21.0.016 Firmware Available via NUS

N95_1_v21_FW
The latest version of firmware for the original Nokia N95 is now available via Nokia Update Service. It took a while and now it has arrived, coincidently along with a beta version of PC Suite too (early reports say this is buggy).

Unfortunately my net connection at home is down so I can't get it yet. My ISP has sulphur in their servers, how that got there I don't know. The sheer incompetence, really! Also as I'll be busy for the next few days (social commitments) I doubt I'll be able to get it until the weekend! Frustrating indeed!
For now keep your eyes on some of the blogs on my blogroll for more info and feedback regarding this update.

N95-1 v21.0.016 Available Now...

But now there is some light and truth in those regurgitations it seems.

N95-1 V21.0.001 Spotted

There has been recent talk about the V21.0.001 firmware for the Original Nokia N95, which is available to developers currently. This version includes the support of Flashlite 3.0 within the S60 browser, which means support for viewing video from Youtube and other similar sites within your S60 browser.
This feature is currently available for the N95 8GB running on v15.0.015 firmware.
Hopefully we will see it for public release soon.

As soon as it is available for public release (here's hoping very soon) I'll have the details on here. So stay tuned.

N82 Firmware V11.0.117 Released

Jaikuers were dully notified by R200 of a new firmware available to N82 users.
There is no official change log yet. But the feedback so far is positive (upgrading always is, well majority of the time).

The update can be found either using the Nokia Software Updater or visiting their website and downloading the latest application, it seems to be necessary to upgrade if you have any old versions of Nokia Software Updater before upgrading.

[Guide] Upgrading to a Generic Firmware

I'm starting to create a few guides which will help the NORMOB's (normal mobile user) and mobile enthusiasts alike. There are two reasons for this; a) helps me moderate the Mobile9 Forums making life much easier for myself and the other moderators and b) to help the general mobile user.
My first guide will be aimed at showing the users with branded handsets how to change upgrade their firmware and change to an unbranded generic version.

I will state that you follow this guide at your own risk, your handset may become void from warranty and there is always a small chance things could go horribly wrong. So please do not hold me responsible for any ill fated results that may occur.

This guide will work on Nokia N95-1 (European version) and may work on other N95 variants.

Firstly the tools of the trade required to follow this guide (I will be doing this on the presumption you are running a Windows set-up):

Firstly, download and install Nemesis Service Suite, Nokia Pc Suite and the Nokia Software Updater (the Nokia Software Updater may come bundled with the Nokia Pc Suite). Make sure your handset is fully charged.
Plug the handset into the USB cable and put it into "Pc Suite" mode.
Run the Nemesis Service Suite, you should be presented with the following screen:

Clicking on the little magnifying icon will scan your handset and NSS will display the information on screen. You can click along the tabs and clicking "SCAN" will show the various sources of information relating to your handset. Do not start to mess around with anything if you aren't sure about anything.
Click on the "Phone Info" tab and hit scan to get your IMEI number and your "Product Code" the latter which we are interested in. Tick the box next to the Product Code area where it says "Enable" see screenshot below for more info.

Next we need to find a generic product code for your handset. AllAboutSymbian have a thread with collection of product codes for the N95-1. I would suggest using either the EURO1 - Sand (0534851) or EURO1 - Plum (0536062)to be on the safe side. Simply enter the code replacing the old product code and hit the write button. This will instantly replace the old product code with the new product code entered.

Next step is to close down the NSS and start-up the Nokia Software Updater. Follow the prompts on screen to scan for the latest firmware and upgrade. The Nokia Software Updater will download the latest firmware for the product code entered and update your handset. This can take up to an hour depending on your internet connection. Do not disconnect your handset from the USB cable as this may harm your handset whilst the update process is running.

Once the Updater is done you can unplug it and re sync your data back to the model and reconfigure your device and enjoy the latest generic firmware on your handset and enjoy the handset as it was originally meant to be.

No more Operator Branding. Enjoy!

*Note- This Guide is aimed at N95-1 (original release)
**Also Note - Do not restore backup from a different product code, do your backup after changing product code

N95 Changelog for v12.0.013 leaked

As usual Symbian-Freak has leaked the change log for the new v12.0.013 firmware for the N95.

Hop on over to their site for the full story, some nice image and camera adjustments are welcomed. A 3.5G HSDPA icon shows when connecting in 3.5G, which I had noticed myself.

A few other things that have also improved are quicker gallery response and loading times, there also seems to be a slightly better battery lifetime.

New Firmware v12.0.013

Apologies for not posting for a while, I've been really busy with stuff and also quite lazy, I'm on holiday too, So I hope you'll forgive me.

I've still got to do my Tag post which Zach has put upon me!

But for now a short post on the New Firmware which was released a few days ago. Apart from the AGPS there hasn't been any other significant change or improvement I have noticed. Although I haven't exactly been busy playing with my N95 recently either. But Raymasky over on his blog has already done a few rants on the new firmware, so be sure to hop on over there and read.

With the Firmware update I decided to reformat my N95 and organise it a bit better. Hopefully in the next few days/weeks I'll be able to post more.

Until then I'll leave you with a screenshot of the firmware upgrade.
Firmware v 12.0.013

Firmware Update

So after waiting a few days I decided to use Nemesis Service Suite to change my product code to 0536062 EURO1 - Plum which I got from a thread at AllAboutSymbian.
After having trouble for a little while where the Nokia Updater kept disconnecting my internet connection it started to download the new firmware update, all 113MB of it!!

I've taken some screen shots of the process in chronological order and a screenshot of the new firmware on my phone.

After the upgrade was finished, I restored the backup from my PC. I got the contacts back no problems, but some of the software installed were missing. Y-Browser, SkyForce, Nsysinfo, Screenshot, Best Taskman, Large Time Screensaver all which had to be re-installed. I'm sure this was due to them being installed in the phone memory, but should the backup not include them?

I also noticed some new icons which appeared, although this may be down to my operator branding, as I had the T-Mobile icons before. PTT and IM icons appeared, none of which I will be using personally, but it's nice to know I have them there.

I haven't yet seen the effects of the new firmware. But coming the next week or so, I'll post about my experiences with this new firmware.

[Update] New N95 Firmware Change Log

Symbian-Freak has just obtained and released kindly for us the official change log for the new v11.0.026 firmware for the Nokia N95.

Here is a list of some of the welcomed improvements on my part:

  • Camera improvements, stabilisation and quicker video capture

  • Browser out of memory improved

  • WLAN stability improved

  • Multimedia menu startup time improved

To find out the full list of improvements and an actual comparison of the camera enhancements pop on over to THIS page.

Unfortunately branded handsets do not have the firmware update available, and neither do some generic handsets either. Fingers crossed they will be available soon.

New N95 Firmware Released?

Looks like Nokia is starting to roll out the new firmware for the N95. Their Phone Update page has the N95 listed now. Check the image below:

I have downloaded the Uploader programme, installed and run it, but no luck.

No updates available

It seems only certain models with specific region codes can be update. In particular it seems that models with a EURO1 product code 0536062 have the update available.

Reports say that the improvements from the new v11.0.026 firmware is a faster camera response and a more stable Wi-Fi. The official change log has not yet been released. If you are dying to get your hands on the new firmware you can change your product code using NSS to the EURO1 0536062. Be warned the download file is a whopping 113MB!

I personally will wait a few days for an official update for my model. If it seems there isn't one coming soon, I may decide on the 2nd option.
