3 MiFi Dongle - The Hardware

After yesterdays little Sneak Peak, here's a more informative and closer look at the MiFi dongle which 3 have kindly let me trial.

The device itself is very curvaceous and small, the front is a brushed metallic look, but is plastic whilst the back itself is shiny white plastic. We can see here it's made by Huawei and the model number is E5830 and is WiFi certified - good good.

On the sides we have a few buttons to operate the device itself, which include Power, Wifi/WPS toggle, Online toggle and on the opposite side a MicroSD slot to enable sharing files via WiFi across the connected devices.

Taking a look inside we can see the battery powering this is a 1500mAh battery, which is rated at 5 hours of us. This can be charged using the USB cable provided via a connected Laptop or via mains charger. There is also a SIM slot where the designated SIM card should be inserted as well as the original Passkey for connecting via WiFi and MAC addresses and serial numbers - not very different from a mobile phone innards really.

Initial impressions on using this so far is that the signal is pretty good, whilst the speed is pretty quick! I have connected at least 2 devices, using simultaneously and the device has coped pretty easily.

I'm waiting for a Press Kit, so you should expect more conclusive specifications later in the week. The device itself is on sale this Friday (18th Sep 09) from 3 stores.

It will be available in a Pay As you Go bundle and a Rolling Monthly Contract:

Pay As You Go:
£99 with 3GB of data inclusive - which can be used over 3 months

Monthly Rolling Contract:
£69.99 for the device and £15 per month for 5GB of data.

More data bundles can be added as required.

Just bought one! How does the micro-SD card slot work? I've configured the MiFi on a PC but will I be able to see the micro-SD data from a Mac?
