I'm starting to create a few guides which will help the NORMOB's (normal mobile user) and mobile enthusiasts alike. There are two reasons for this; a) helps me moderate the Mobile9 Forums making life much easier for myself and the other moderators and b) to help the general mobile user.
My first guide will be aimed at showing the users with branded handsets how to change upgrade their firmware and change to an unbranded generic version.

I will state that you follow this guide at your own risk, your handset may become void from warranty and there is always a small chance things could go horribly wrong. So please do not hold me responsible for any ill fated results that may occur.

This guide will work on Nokia N95-1 (European version) and may work on other N95 variants.

Firstly the tools of the trade required to follow this guide (I will be doing this on the presumption you are running a Windows set-up):

Firstly, download and install Nemesis Service Suite, Nokia Pc Suite and the Nokia Software Updater (the Nokia Software Updater may come bundled with the Nokia Pc Suite). Make sure your handset is fully charged.
Plug the handset into the USB cable and put it into "Pc Suite" mode.
Run the Nemesis Service Suite, you should be presented with the following screen:

Clicking on the little magnifying icon will scan your handset and NSS will display the information on screen. You can click along the tabs and clicking "SCAN" will show the various sources of information relating to your handset. Do not start to mess around with anything if you aren't sure about anything.
Click on the "Phone Info" tab and hit scan to get your IMEI number and your "Product Code" the latter which we are interested in. Tick the box next to the Product Code area where it says "Enable" see screenshot below for more info.

Next we need to find a generic product code for your handset. AllAboutSymbian have a thread with collection of product codes for the N95-1. I would suggest using either the EURO1 - Sand (0534851) or EURO1 - Plum (0536062)to be on the safe side. Simply enter the code replacing the old product code and hit the write button. This will instantly replace the old product code with the new product code entered.

Next step is to close down the NSS and start-up the Nokia Software Updater. Follow the prompts on screen to scan for the latest firmware and upgrade. The Nokia Software Updater will download the latest firmware for the product code entered and update your handset. This can take up to an hour depending on your internet connection. Do not disconnect your handset from the USB cable as this may harm your handset whilst the update process is running.

Once the Updater is done you can unplug it and re sync your data back to the model and reconfigure your device and enjoy the latest generic firmware on your handset and enjoy the handset as it was originally meant to be.

No more Operator Branding. Enjoy!

*Note- This Guide is aimed at N95-1 (original release)
**Also Note - Do not restore backup from a different product code, do your backup after changing product code

No problems, I'm glad it worked for you.

Anonymous said... @ 21-Jan-2008 11:02:00

worked for me..
Nokia N95 v1, branded with Three Australia
Generic code use - 0534835

Just had to not copy across backed up settings, as it screwed it up. All the bookmarks, msgs, contacts, came across fine. All Three network features seem to work.. only did it today, will report any problems..
Although it seems to make it easier for me to set it so it won't switch automatically onto a roaming profile (which costs more on data) i like this. And the Wi-fi features seem easier..

Abul Hussain said... @ 25-Jan-2008 14:56:00

@rencky - You can change your product code to a generic version and reinstall the latest firmware. Google should help you out with the product codes.

NSS can't find my N95, i've installed the latest version, NSS -virtual usb device. Do i have to reinstall the usb drivers or something?

Adonis said... @ 12-Apr-2008 14:47:00

@Anonymous You will need the USB drivers that are used with Nokia PC Suite, you should have that installed.

Anonymous said... @ 16-Apr-2008 16:52:00

Hi Adonis; I get a scan for product error?! My USB cable is working because my PC suite recognize my phone...what do I do wrong

Anonymous said... @ 17-Apr-2008 14:50:00

same problem as me, after installing nss you get a usb driver installation guide window, and it says that there wil pop up a "new hardware found" wondow. but i don't get that window.. and i dont finf new hardware with the search option. Do i have to plug out the usb cable during instalation?

Adonis said... @ 17-Apr-2008 15:07:00

@Guys Having Issues - I would try rebooting your machine and trying to re attach the cable again. If the PC Suite Recognises your handset the NSS should do also.

Anonymous said... @ 17-Apr-2008 18:05:00

10 boot's later same result. pc suite works fine, when I click at device info in NSS i get this:

Anonymous said... @ 10-May-2008 10:35:00

Het nss progje werkt opzich prima, maar na de scan staat er bij:

product code n/a
warranty start n/a
warranty end n/a
warranty n/a
factory simlock n/a

Tis een t-mobile branded 12.0.013 n95-1.

timeforchange said... @ 12-Jun-2008 12:50:00

hi i am trying to update have changed the product code and ran nokia software updater, am getting stuck on updating the software it tells me "updating software, please wait.... Estimated time left 15 minutes, then after few minutes a screen pops up for Phone recovery and tells me to remove battery etc. has done this several times and still not working. ihave even ran nss again and changed product code to different number with no luck. Any suggestions welcome?

Adonis said... @ 12-Jun-2008 12:52:00

@Timeforchange - I wouldn't recommend changing product code whilst in the middle of an update. When you get stuck at updating usually I keep trying until it does the update. Might take a few attempts.

Ezo said... @ 15-Jun-2008 18:41:00

Trying to update T-mobile branded N95 from firmware 14.0.001 to the latest version (21.0.016). This results in the same problem as timeforchange describes.

Adonis said... @ 15-Jun-2008 19:24:00

@Ezo - Not sure what the issue is, perhaps Nokia have changed their updating procedure? Make sure to have the latest NUS software installed. Would like to try it myself , but don't have an old handset to hand.

Just curious which exact product codes are you guys using?

timeforchange said... @ 17-Jun-2008 13:44:00

hi im using euro 1 plum l have tried several others as well with no luck, i have tried this with another n95 and getting asame problem, any ideas?

Adonis said... @ 17-Jun-2008 14:36:00

Not sure what the issue could be, but I would assume you're all using the latest NSS and NUS applications. If so, it may be something Nokia has changed. I'm pretty lost as to what it could be.

Peter said... @ 14-Jul-2008 19:42:00

Am having the same problems with my tmobile N95 as timeforchange and ezo. Asked nokia what to do. Ill post a possible answer here.

Peter said... @ 12-Aug-2008 20:14:00

Anonymous said... @ 06-Oct-2008 21:25:00

just used this guide to upgrade t generic v30, works a charmm.

Anonymous said... @ 28-Jan-2009 11:22:00
